Today, we’re offering you a little time travel by taking you to one of the relics of prehistory. Here's a little bit of history to get you in the mood :

Located in the commune of Montignac-Lascaux in the Dordogne, the Lascaux cave contains prehistoric artwork dating back 19 000 years. It was discovered completely by chance on September 8, 1940 by four teenagers walking in the area.  According to their testimony, they discovered the location of the cave while searching for their dog, which had accidentally fallen into a hole. However this just hypothetical.

It is one of the most important decorated caves of the Paleolithic period (the longest period of Prehistory). It was classified as a historical monument in December 1940 and was inaugurated and opened to the public in 1948. The opening of the cave led to degradation of the works of art in the cave by the public and it closed its doors in 1963 by the decision of André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs.

In 1979, the Lascaux cave was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In order to allow the exhibition of these prehistoric paintings to the public, a reproduction of the cave was made on the same hill as the original cave. Called Lascaux II, the cave opened to the public on 18 July 1983.

Since then, two other reproductions of the cave have been created.

First shown in 2012, Lascaux III is a huge travelling exhibition that travels to all 5 continents. The public of the whole world can thus discover this extraordinary replica.

Finally in 2016, Lascaux IV opened its doors. It is an integral and extremely precise replica of the original cave. Each of the works, both paintings and engravings, have been reproduced identically.

Bon voyage!
